You should not use a Telemeter or carry out other distracting mapping activities if you are not sufficiently confident, or require full concentration while doing any (outdoor) activity. As always, make sure you have all the necessary equipment and training, take all sensible precautions, and be aware of the risks. Taking an accurate bearing is a single focus task and makes you vulnerable. Be mindful that there is an awareness gap while you are busy concentrating. Check your surroundings first, and be prepared and ready to switch back, if necessary.
